Training

Welcome to Girl Scout Leadership Training!

Leading a Girl Scout troop is fun! It's also a very influential and important role. Leadership training is required for all adults who work with girls. Our training courses are open to all registered Girl Scout adults and Senior Girl Scouts who work with troops. Training courses are designed to help adults working in a variety of leadership positions that guide the girls through the four Girl Scout program goals.

New Classes - Check Back Soon!

The 2008-2009 Training Course Schedule/Calendar is being planned.  Classes will be posted in mid-July so check back then.

Depending on your volunteer position you may be required to be trained in certain areas of Girl Scout procedure, and general knowledge. Learning and developing new skills and insights are all part of the Girl Scout program, and not just for girls! Well-trained volunteers have the skills and ability to offer the highest quality programming for girls while staying safe and having fun at the same time.

What training is required?

The Girl Scouts Louisiana East Board of Directors requires all volunteers with primary responsibility for working with girls be trained for the position they will assume or have assumed.

Have you completed your volunteer orientation?

Volunteers who work directly with girls must complete volunteer orientation with their Service Unit Manager, Membership & Marketing Executive, or designated person, prior to attending training.

For Troop and Group Leaders

Each Girl Scout troop/group must have at least one registered and trained adult who assumes primary responsibility for that troop. Required training for those leading a troop consists of the two courses and should be taken in order.

New Leader Orientation

The New Leader Orientation is conducted with your Service Unit Manager, Membership Executive or an appointed volunteer and must be attended prior to starting a troop. Some of the topics covered include:

Module I – Basics of Girl Scouts

Basic of Girl Scouts should be taken within your 30 – 60 days of your appointment as a troop leader/advisor. It is recommended that you take this course as soon as possible to help you set an effective climate with both parents and girls. This course will give you the information you need to start your troop, including knowledge of the council policies and procedures, membership standards, safety procedures and guidelines for your first four meetings.

Appropriate Age Level Training

Age Level Training is the second required course and should be taken 30 – 60 days of your appointment as a troop leader/advisor. Choose the age level course of the girls you are or will be working with. Age levels trainings include Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior.

Other questions about basic training:

Do I have to be trained if I am not a troop leader but want to work with girls?

It is the policy of Girl Scouts Louisiana East that all volunteers with primary responsibility for working with girls be trained for the position they will assume or have assumed.

If I am an experienced leader changing age levels do I need training?

Once you have completed Orientation and Module I – Basics of Girl Scouts, you must take the Age Level Leadership Training for your new age level. You should take this course within 30 – 60 days of your first meeting with the girls at the new age level.

I am the co-leader (or troop helper) so can I just take the Age Level class?

You must follow the same series of trainings as the primary leader: Orientation, Module I – Basics of Girl Scouts, and Module II – Age Level training. You will have a greater understanding of the Girl Scout program as you are provided first with generalized information and then more specific information to apply to that foundation.

We are an Outreach group; do we need to take training?

If each adult will have, at some point, primary responsibility for the girls, even if for only one meeting, then yes. You will find that a trained adult leadership team is going to have a more smoothly running troop experience and are more likely to stay together.

Outreach training is offered by the Membership Department. This can be a valuable training for tips on managing an Outreach groups. Contact the Outreach Director at (504) 733-8220.
